va business partner, twitter, 5 twitter tips, grow your twitter, twitter followingIf you are new to Twitter or you have not been using this social media tool to its full potential undoubtedly you are wondering how do I get more followers and increase the amount of individuals I can touch with my message without spending all day on Twitter.

These suggestions for you and your business will not only help you increase your Twitter following (who you follow) but it will lead to an increase in your number of followers (those who follow you). By using these suggestions and tools you will be able to increase the number of followers on your Twitter account which leads to a larger audience and gained exposure for your Twitter account, messages, and updates!

1. Be Interesting – Don’t share what you had for breakfast or that you are tying up your shoelaces. Share interesting and relevant content. Include interesting blog posts, articles, or videos that you think your audience would enjoy. If you have some tips or suggestions tweet those…but make sure they are interesting! Nobody likes boring content that just gives them a reason to unfollow you.

2. Use Twitter search tools to find your target audience and follow twitter users in your target market. The majority of them will follow you back. Some of the tools I use are:

  • http://search.twitter.com/advanced – You have the ability to search for specific words, phrases, people, places, dates, attitudes, etc.
  • http://search.twitter.com/ – This Twitter search tool allows you to search for what’s happening right now on Twitter for your keyword(s). For example, if you are a plumber in Vancouver looking for more clients type in Plumber in Vancouver. Anyone that is Twittering about that subject at that moment will appear! Who knows maybe you will save the day!
  • http://www.twellow.com – Another great tool where you have the ability to search within the categories they have listed. Make sure you add yourself to their listings so people are able to find you when they are searching!
  • http://www.nearbytweets.com – Looking for local twitter users? Use this handy Twitter search tool to find tweets near the location of your choice. Another great way to find local customers, potential customers and fellow twitters near you!
    • 3. Join in the conversation – Re-tweet interesting content posted by fellow twitters’, reply to interesting tweets or answer a question someone has posted on twitter.

      4. Be Authentic – Don’t pretend to be someone your not. When people are connecting and conversing with you they want the real you. This will go a long way to creating long, lasting relationships.

      5. Have a plan – Write down who you want to connect with, why you want to connect with these types of people or organizations and how you are going to do so. Also, have a goal in mind – whether it is to generate 5 new business leads from your Twitter followers or if you want to increase your following to X amount of followers in 6 months. Always have something you can work towards and measure your success with.

I hope you will find these tips useful and that they will help you increase your Twitter following and success! Remember, social media is a conversation – get involved!
